Killed in action Surprise Hill 11 December 1899.

Five companies of the Rifle Brigade with a few engineers, including Lt. Digby
Jones who was to win a posthumous VC at Wagon Hill the following month, made a
night sortie to Surprise Hill and succeeded in destroying the Boers’ 4.7
Howitzer there. Three companies were deployed to keep the withdrawal route
open but the two companies which ascended the hill had to fight their way with
the bayonet through a party of Boers who had infiltrated round the lower slopes
of the hill. Losses in the action were 11 killed, 5 died of wounds and 35 wounded.
Buried at Tin Town Cemetery, Ladysmith. Commemorated on panels in All Saints
Church, Ladysmith.
